The main functions of the Advisory Committee will be to advise on scientific content for the International Health Circle Conference, as well as to organise debates, meetings and round tables that promote collective reflection on the present and future challenges of the health system.

This multidisciplinary team is made up of prominent profiles from the field of health management and policy such as Luis Rosado Bretón (chairman of the committee and former Minister of Health of the Valencian Community), Boi Ruiz García (former Minister of Health of Catalonia), Margarita Alfonsel (former Secretary General of FENIN), Antonio Martos López (Global Health Director at Indra) and Tomás Ruiz (former Director General of the Electromedicine Business Group), Antonio Martos López (Global Director of Healthcare at Indra) and Tomás Ruiz (former General Manager of the Electromedicine Business Group), together with Rocío Mosquera Álvarez, who brings her experience as former Regional Minister of Health of the Xunta de Galicia and current Director of the Clúster Saúde de Galicia.

The creation of this committee is part of the new Strategic Plan 2025-2027 of the Círculo de la Sanidad, which includes 22 measures aimed at improving sustainability, efficiency, social responsibility and innovation in the healthcare system, promoting real collaboration between administrations, companies, professionals and patients.

The CSG welcomes this designation as a recognition of Rocío Mosquera’s career and the work of the Galician healthcare ecosystem, which thus strengthens its presence in the main spaces of decision making and analysis of the health sector at a national level.

DDuring the ceremony, the documentary “Sustainability as a Driver of Change in the Galician Health Service” was screened, showcasing the work carried out by SERGAS in the field of sustainability. This was followed by a round table focused on decarbonizing the healthcare sector, featuring representatives from ECODES (Ecology and Development Foundation), AENOR, and the General Manager of SERGAS, José Ramón Parada Jorgal.

At the event, the certifying body AENOR formally handed over the certification to the Regional Minister of Health and the SERGAS General Manager, who in turn acknowledged the active involvement of the seven participating health areas and of Galaria EPSS, SA —a CSG member organization— in the process of evaluating and improving their carbon footprint.

Collaboration with GAIN: a strategy for the consolidation of the biotech sector

The Galician Biotechnology Sector Consolidation Strategy, developed in collaboration with the Galician Innovation Agency (GAIN), aims to position the region as a reference hub for biotechnology. This plan promotes the use and application of biotechnology in all economic sectors and fosters a collaborative ecosystem that favors entrepreneurship, growth and the attraction of companies to Galicia. The CSG expands the services offered to the regional biotech ecosystem, especially in innovation, strengthening its international positioning as a prominent biotech region and promoting the transfer of knowledge among key stakeholders in the sector.

RePo-SUDOE Project: innovation in “drug repurposing”.

One of the key initiatives for 2025 is the RePo-SUDOE project, which seeks to turn the SUDOE area (Southwest Europe: Portugal, Spain and France) into a European leader in drug repurposing. This program develops and disseminates advanced technologies to increase the competitiveness of the health sector and attract specialized talent.

The CSG leads the communication management of the project, disseminating its progress and results through multiple channels. It also organizes events to engage stakeholders, expanding the impact and visibility of this initiative at the European level.

EDIH DATAlife: supporting SMEs in the adoption of disruptive technologies

The CSG continues its participation in the EDIH DATAlife project, which supports the implementation of disruptive technologies in validation phases, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), High Performance Computing (HPC) and Internet of Things (IoT), to improve the competitiveness of Galician companies. Through free consulting and proof-of-concept services, the project will facilitate the adoption of these technologies, especially among SMEs, boosting the digitization of the sector.

The CSG plays a key role in this project, offering test-before-invest services through living labs, facilitating the participation of stakeholders and promoting collaboration between the public and private sectors to ensure the success of the initiative.

RIES 2025 Forum: an unmissable event

Another highlight of the calendar is the 10th Edition of the Forum RIES 2025, scheduled for the end of the year. This event, which celebrates its tenth anniversary, has become a key space for debate on the future of the health sector.

The 2025 edition promises to be a special milestone, with an agenda that will include the presentation of the sector’s most innovative initiatives, panel discussions with international thought leaders, round tables, and forums designed to explore the main challenges and opportunities within the healthcare ecosystem. In addition, this edition is expected to be a key platform for forging new strategic alliances between companies, academic institutions, and public organizations.

The Forum RIES reaffirms its position as an essential meeting point for the sector’s stakeholders, strengthening collaboration and fostering the creation of synergies that drive innovation and development in the region.

With experience from 72 Innovation Projects, the Cluster Saúde de Galicia, CSG faces this new year with an ambitious vision. Its commitment to collaboration, innovation and talent development reaffirms its dedication to making Galicia a global health leader.

On 13th and 14th November, Guitiriz will host the 9th edition of the RIES 2024 Forum, an event that has established itself as a benchmark in the field of health and innovation. With just one month to go before the event, registration is already open and the participation of leading personalities who will lead discussions on the future of the sector is expected. Key figures confirmed for this edition include:

• Ignasi Belda, director of the Spanish Agency for the Supervision of Artificial Intelligence (AESIA), will offer an insight into the impact of artificial intelligence in the healthcare sector. Belda is a benchmark in the field of AI applied to healthcare, and his participation in RIES 2024 will provide an insight into how this technology will revolutionise diagnosis, treatment and healthcare management in the coming years.
• Michel Poulain, enowned demographer and expert in the study of global longevity zones (Blue Zones). His approach, based on the analysis of factors that favour a longer and healthier life, will provide a unique perspective on the demographic challenges facing health systems in Europe and the world. Poulain has been instrumental in identifying areas of the planet where people are living significantly longer, and his knowledge will be instrumental in exploring strategies to promote healthy ageing.
• Iria Rodríguez Cobo, Head of the Data Office of the National Health System (SNS), Ministry of Health, who will bring his experience in health data management and its role in the implementation of public policies based on innovation and efficiency. Rodríguez Cobo has played a key role in the digitisation and optimisation strategy for health information in Spain.
• Mariano González Gómez, Senior Advisor at Dubai Health, a leading international healthcare institution, who will contribute his experience in innovation and management of healthcare services in large urban areas. His participation will contribute to a better understanding of global healthcare models and opportunities for collaboration between Europe and the Middle East.

In addition to these figures, #RIES24 will bring together international experts in innovation, technology and health from both the public and private sectors, creating a space for dialogue and reflection on the challenges and opportunities of the future of healthcare. An estimated 300 attendees in total are expected to attend.

The international forum #RIES, organized by Galician Health Cluster, returns to Guitiriz for its ninth edition to address the challenges and opportunities of the healthcare ecosystem. In this occasion, the event will focus on the future of healthcare, aligning with one of the main objectives of the CSG: to be a platform for public-private collaboration that promotes innovative projects in the sector, thus promoting significant advances.

As it is tradition, the discussion agoras will be the focal point of the event, offering an outstanding space for debate and reflection on crucial topics such as: Personalized and Cutting Edge Medicine, Biomedicine, Hybrid Care and Circular Health. The event will have attendance from leading figures from the healthcare sector so that companies, organizations and researchers in the sector can grow around collaboration, partnership, testing and speed to market.

The CSG was born as a visionary project in the region thanks to the impulse and the vision of its founders and collaborators From its creation, the CSG has become a key reference poitn for the promotion of innovation and development in the health and care sector in Galicia and beyond.

After over ten years of effort and collaboration, we can proudly affirm that we have made progress in our mission of building synergies that allow us to optimize our competitiveness and improve people’s lives. Because we’re always seeking to make Galicia the best place to grow old with health. We have witnessed how our projects, partners and collaborators have made a tangible difference in the quality life of people and the environment that surrounds us.

However, we understant the importance of looking towards the future and facing new challenges with renewed determination and leadership. In this spirit of continuous evolution, we welcome Iván Rarís Filgueira as CSG’s new Managing Director, thus taking up the baton left by Gisela García-Álvarez during these years.

About Iván Rarís

In the recent years, Iván has been the area director at AFAGA Alzheimer, an entity dedicated to innovation in comprehensive care for people with Alzheimer’s, simultaneously practicing as a lawyer specialized in the social care field. Iván has also been exercising different direct roles in various governing bodies of sectoral organizacions, such as the CSG, and university initiatives. He has also been a speaker at various national and international events in the health and care sector.

This transition marks a new chapter in the history of the CSG, but does not mean a breach, but rather a renewed and strengthened continuity of our commitments. We wish Gisela García-Álvarez the best of success and we are sure that our paths will cross again.

La entrada Interreg RePo-SUDOE project kick-off se publicó primero en Cluster Saúde de Galicia, CSG.

In a context where technology and innovation are rapidly transforming the way we conceive and deliver health and care services, the Galician Health Cluster has assumed a central role at the forefront of this revolution. The CSG has decided to continue in 2024 with a new European project: the Twinning DHU (Digital Health Uptake). This project not only marks a milestone in international collaboration, but also represents a firm commitment to continuous improvement and homogenization of digital solutions in the field of health and care.

The Twinning DHU project stands as a beacon of progress in this field. It is a mechanism to facilitate the transfer and implementation of innovative digital practices from one region to another. Therefore, its primary objective is to establish a solid foundation for the standardization and constant improvement of digital health and care solutions through Living Labs (LL’s) in the participating regions. These LL’s are not mere spaces for technological exchange, but rather become authentic incubators for co-creation, testing, prototyping and data management. It is in this place of ideas where cutting-edge digital solutions that are redefining the global health and social care landscape are born and perfected.

In this project we find the idea that digital transformation in health and care is not an isolated process, but rather a complete ecosystem that involves regulators, service providers, researchers and, most importantly, the patient and end-users themselves. Living Labs immerse themselves in the different healthcare ecosystems, intimately connecting the real needs of users with the technological solutions available. This user-centered approach ensures that innovations are not only technologically advanced, but also truly relevant and effective in clinical practice.

Participants in the Twinning

During this new adventure towards digital transformation, the CSG joins its collaborators ThessAHALL, leader of the twinning, and the Son Espases University Hospital, a BIOIB partner, being the latest also a member of the #ClustersSaludEspaña alliance. Throughout this time, ThessAHALL will strive to support and improve the capacity of the ITGALL services, the Galician Health Cluster, and the Son Espases University Hospital in order to promote Living Lab initiatives for the adoption and expansion of innovations.

To achieve this, three online meetings and other face-to-face meetings have been organized mainly to share common points. CSG proposed the creation of a Living Labs agora as part of the VIII edition of the Forum RIES 2023, led and organized by them. This annual event, recognized for its focus on innovative health and care solutions and their impact on people’s well-being, has become a key meeting and discussion space in the sector. In this way, and with the aim of strengthening this collaboration, the “Ágora Living Labs in care. How to homogenize at a European level the validation of digital solutions in care through Living Labs” was developed and where it was possible to talk and interact about crucial topics such as: European standardization, financing, ethics, co-creation with citizens, the role of LL’s, etc., and much more, generating synergies with various entities in the sector.

On the other hand, the partners of this project (ThessAHAL, ITGALL and the Son Espases University Hospital) also participated in the Health and Wellbeing Living Lab Symposium in Brussels. Organized by the VITALISE project and the European Living Labs Network, the harmonization of Living Labs services and procedures as Health and Wellness Research Infrastructures was highlighted. ThessAHALL presented in this framework the interests of the adopting members with the continuation of this project. Additionally, best practices in using Living Labs for health and wellbeing research were discussed, with one-on-one meetings between the twinning lead members and adopters to create detailed adoption plans.

Together, they commit to strengthening existing capabilities, fostering collaboration, and opening the doors to new initiatives that drive the adoption and expansion of these technologies in the health field. This joint effort not only promises a more efficient and connected future in healthcare, but also represents an inspiring example of how international collaboration can lead to transformative results and tangible benefits for society as a whole.

Next steps

The Galician Health Cluster will continue its commitment to the Twinning DHU project taking advantage of the strengths of its care ecosystem, identified since 2018. During this time, the CSG has implemented several strategic lines of action to create sustainable value-added services. The identified testing and piloting capabilities, together with a community that offered the perfect context to develop turnkey projects, have been brought together under the ITGALL umbrella. Thanks to the IN-4-AHA project, a co-creation, testing and reporting protocol was established and validated, along with the development of well-being indicators. The latter have proven to be a good start for a business model that guarantees the sustainability of ITGALL. However, with this twinning it is hoped to gain a broader understanding of the interconnection of Living Labs and the ability to collaborate and validate technologies more effectively. This initiative will further strengthen the CSG’s commitment to innovation and continuous improvement in the field of digital health.

In addition, two upcoming key events for innovation and collaboration in this sector are highlighted: the Innovation Day HLL Son Espases 2024, which will bring together various actors to explore solutions in healthcare, and the V International Conference on Medical Education Informatics in Greece, organized by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the University of Nottingham, which will provide a platform to address crucial topics such as health innovation, the integration of emerging technologies and the impact of university education on the digital transformation of health, promoting thus the exchange of knowledge and the generation of ideas at a global level.

Both events will be meeting points to share knowledge, practices and see future advances.
